About Us

Welcome to the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Wayne State University!

Advances in technology are providing above average job growth in areas that require strong proficiency in science and mathematics - your choice of a degree in Physics & Astronomy is a wise one! Our department offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Please browse our Academic Programs link to find out about the choices available to you.

A degree in physics or astronomy will give you a solid foundation that you can use as a stepping stone toward degrees in medical and health science, education, law, graduate school, and many other professional disciplines.

Our talented and dedicated faculty conducts cutting edge research in many areas: visit our Research Programs link.  As part of our undergraduate "honors" program, you may participate in these areas of research with a faculty mentor. Many undergraduates participate in paid research projects through the Research Experience for Undergraduates program (REU) funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

As you study, take advantage of our in-house Physics Resource Center. Graduate Teaching Assistants are on-hand to provide free tutoring with your physics coursework.

And, students play an active role in our department through the SPS – Society of Physics Students. Our group is a local chapter of the national SPS organization. The SPS meet on a regular basis in their own student lounge to discuss coursework and plan activities.
