Masters with AGRADE

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has established an accelerated combined undergraduate and graduate program.

Accelerated Graduate Enrollment (AGRADE) procedures enable qualified seniors in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences to enroll simultaneously in the undergraduate and graduate programs of the College and apply a maximum of 15 credits toward both an undergraduate and graduate degree in the student's major field. Students who elect the AGRADE program may expect to complete the Bachelor's and Master's degrees in five years of full-time study.


1. An up-to-date WSU transcript must be submitted with AGRADE application.
2. AGRADE plans of work must be on file no later than the 2nd week of classes for new applicants.


Masters Degree in Electrical & Computer Engineering (MS-ECE)

Interdisciplinary Physics-ECE AGRADE Program

Outstanding seniors in physics (both applied physics option and fundamental physics option), who have completed at least 90 credits and have an overall GPA of at least 3.5, and major physics classes GPA of at least 3.6, can apply to enter the cross-college AGRADE program between the physics undergraduate program (College of Liberals Arts and Sciences) and electrical engineering (EE) master’s programs (College of Engineering). The AGRADE program allows students to apply up to 12 credits of selected graduate courses, taken as an undergraduate, towards a master’s degree in electrical engineering. The physics courses that can be counted toward a M.S.-EE degree include PHY5340/41, PHY5620/21 and PHY5100. This enables students to complete an undergraduate degree in physics and a graduate degree in electrical engineering in just five years of full-time study. How does it work?

Outline of the AGRADE Program


AGRADE Credit Hours

Students may elect a minimum of three (3) and a maximum of fifteen (15) AGRADE credit hours. These will be used to complete the baccalaureate degree as well as to serve as the beginning of graduate study. Upon formal admission to a Master's degree program, AGRADE courses are treated as if they were graduate credits transferred from a graduate program at another university. The remaining graduate credits required for the Master's degree will be earned in the usual manner following formal admission to the graduate program.

Administrative "Home"

The College's AGRADE program is administered by the Graduate Office of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The Physics-ECE AGRADE program is administered by the College of Engineering.

Time of Application

The earliest a student may apply for the AGRADE program is the semester in which he/she completes 90 credit hours towards the undergraduate degree.


Applicants must have an overall Grade Point Average (GPA) which places them in the top 20th percentile of the senior class (Cum Laude). Please contact the Liberal Arts and Sciences Graduate Office for the current GPA. Applicants are also expected to have performed at a superior level in the major, as determined by the department, except that the required GPA in the major at the time of application shall not be less than 3.6.


Some departments of the College may choose not to participate in the AGRADE program. Interested students must contact the chairperson of their major department to ascertain if it is a participant in AGRADE.

Application Procedures

Except for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) in departments in which it is required for graduate admission, a student seeking AGRADE status should present the Graduate Admissions Committee of his/her major department all of the material which that department requires for normal admission. Specific details of the department's normal admissions procedures can be found in the Wayne State University Graduate Bulletin or in the Graduate Office of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

For departments in which the GRE is required for admission, it is expected that this exam will be taken at the normal time and the scores forwarded to the major department. Admission into AGRADE status does not require prior receipt of these scores.


AGRADE Registration

Registration for approved AGRADE coursework is no different from normal registration procedures. If any approved courses are at the 7000 or 8000 level, the student may have to obtain a registration override from the department.

Receipt of Bachelor's Degree

Students will receive their Bachelor's degree at the normal time.

Master's Plan of Work

Applicants must complete a Master's Plan of Work which designates the type of Master's Degree being chosen (Plan A, B or C). If the Plan of Work includes those upper-division courses in which both undergraduate and graduate students participate, AGRADE students will be held to the course standards required of the graduate students.


Graduate courses taken as part of the AGRADE program carry undergraduate tuition.

Transfer of Courses

Because grades of "B-", “C” and "D" are treated differently at the graduate and undergraduate levels, only those AGRADE-approved courses in which the student subsequently earns a "B" or higher will transfer to the graduate transcript.


Students accepted into AGRADE status will be assigned a graduate advisor in their major department.


Upon acceptance into AGRADE status by the Department and College, the Liberal Arts and Sciences Graduate Office will process an AGRADE curriculum code for the student.

Final Approval of Graduate Status

At the normal time during the senior year, the student will be reviewed for formal admission into the department's graduate program. All materials required by the department for regular admission must be available at this time. Under normal circumstances approval of AGRADE status will be followed by formal acceptance into the graduate program.

The Graduate Transcript

Following formal admission into the Department's Master's Program, AGRADE coursework will be entered onto the graduate transcript by the Office of the Registrar. Students who drop the AGRADE program at any time prior to completion of the Master's degree will not have AGRADE courses posted on the graduate transcript.


Courses already on the student's transcript at the time of application cannot be approved for AGRADE status. Students who have already completed the Baccalaureate degree are not eligible for AGRADE status.
